The Montessori Method

The Montessori method is an approach towards education with a focus on child-centered learning. Because of her strong background in the scientific method, her evidence-based conclusions have shown great success in diverse cultures throughout the world.

The Montessori method views the child as one who is eager to learn when given the right environment. The proper foundation is especially critical during the early years of life. It goes beyond just academic learning, and extends to the ability to concentrate, persevere, think independently and interact with others. Children who have received the right type of support in their formative years mature into self-directed adults who love learning, are flexible and creative, and are aware of the needs of others.

In other words, the Montessori method encompasses the whole person: physical, intellectual, emotional and social.

Characteristics of the Montessori Method

While there are many various aspects to the Montessori method, the essential elements include:

• Mixed age groups that foster peer learning. Older students that are helping younger ones benefit greatly, just as the younger ones who learn from those who are older.
• Guided choice of activities. Children are allowed to choose from a variety of learning activities, giving them freedom to find an experience that suits their needs.
• Uninterrupted periods of work
• Use of specially designed Montessori learning materials
• Properly trained Montessori teachers. Teachers guide and support the students as they move through the learning stages at their own pace.

In the Montessori classroom, the child, the teacher and the environment all play a crucial role in learning. The child has individual freedom to choose what the environment has to offer, all the while interacting with the teacher, who offers guidance as needed.
